Jazzy B, Underground Authority rock CGC Gharuan

Crowds went crazy today in the grounds of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Gharuan as the king of Punjabi bhangra and pop, Jazzy B, brought down the house with pulsating numbers as students gathered for the final day of TECH FEST 2012 shrieked 'Once More', bringing to an end the event which brought together the best in technology and culture in the region.

As young girls and boys, who had competed for two days in the state-level techno-cultural event let their hair down when Jazzy B took to the stage, there was no holding back in the alderine-pumping performance as one after the other rip-roaring numbers was met with thunderous applause.

Jazzy B's fiery performance raised the temperature to a level where it threatened to beat any notion of it being a winter season. Groups of students broke into impromptu bhangras and jigs every few minutes on the hit numbers of Jazzy B like Naag Saambh Lai Zulfan De, Surma, Rambo Rambo and many others.

Jazzy B's rocking performance followed a sensational show put up by Kolkata's national level rock band Underground Authority that kept the crowds on its feet all through the wintery night.

Whether it was Underground Authority or Jazzy B, students matched the oodles of energy of the performers shriek for shriek, shout for shout.

The Fashion Show featuring bridalwear, western, fusion and winterwear only added to the colour as models scorched the ramp.

Scores of students from leading institutes of the region, including IITs, NITs, UBS, UIET, CCCET, Lovely Professional University and CGC Landran and Gharuan who had participated in the TECH FEST, also enjoyed the pulsating evening. 

Earlier in the day, CGC grounds witnessed a Battle of Bands event where the winner band walked away with the first slot prize money of Rs 10,000 various bands put up an energetic show one after the other on the stage even as technical and non technical contests continued in the labs and amid sprawling crowds of CGC Gharuan.

Students from IET Bhaddal won the Rs 10,000 first prize in the Track-O-Mania (Landrover) event while Lovely Professional University students walked away with top prize in Web Designing competition. Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) Chandigarh bagged the top award for Best Recipe.

Appreciating the fact that crowds of students showed not just great enthusiasm but also remarkable restraint, Chief Guest Sh Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, SSP Mohali and guest of honour Mr Sukhdev Singh Virk, DSP congratulated them for displaying such talent in not just technical domain but also in the cultural field.

CGC Chairman Satnam Singh Sandhu and President Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal said that the CGC TECH FEST has now emerged as a premier platform for students across the region for showcasing their talent.

Bhangra Olympiad organized at GND University

International Punjabi Folklore Academy organized Bhangra Olympiad, a competition of Bhangra here today in the Dashmesh Auditorium of the Guru Nanak Dev University.

               Dr. MPS Ishar, Former Dean, Students' Welfare & newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University and Dr. P.S. Cheema, Dean Students' Welfare of Punjab Agriculture University inaugurated this festival by lighting candles. Dr. Inderjit Singh, Registrar of the University and President of Academy also present.

Eminent Punjabi, folk singer, S. Malkit Singh presided over and famous Singers, K.S. Makhan and Lakhwinder Wadali were the special guests on this occasion.

               All the winner teams of Bhangra item of Youth  Festival from the universities of Punjab performed in this festival. A cash prize of Rs. 5100 was awarded to the best dancer of each Bhangra team which includes Lakhbir Singh of Punjab University, Chandigarh, Sukhdip Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Gurshaminder Singh of Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, Parampreet Singh Punjabi University, Patiala and Baldeep Singh of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. Certificate and trophies were presented to the all teams. In addition to this an honorarium of Rs. 3000 was also given to each team as traveling allowance. 

IIT Ropar, PEC students shine at CGC Tech Fest

Amid cutting-edge technological battles and cultural razzmatazz, the CGC Tech Fest 2012 took off to a colourful start at Chandigarh Group of Colleges' Gharuan Campus where 15,000 students from leading institutes of the region had converged to compete for cash prizes worth lakhs in a variety of technical and non-technical competitions.

 The duo of Kamaldeep Singh and Sumit Gaurav from IIT Ropar beat scores of competitors in Reverse Gear a software event of Computer Science in one of the most prestigious contests while Chintan Kaur and Surbhi Negi of PEC University, Chandigarh walked away with top prize and Rs. 10,000 prize money in Project Presentation contest.

 More than 2,000 students from IITs, NITs, UBS, UIET, CCCET, Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, CGC Landran and Gharuan and other leading colleges of the region showcased their: robots, cars, circuit making skills, etc, with the winners walking away with hefty cash prizes.

 Legendary marathon runner, the centenarian Fauja Singh, who was a guest of honour at the Tech Fest 2012 was a centre of attraction with students jostling to get themselves photographed with him. Students felt honored at the chance of accepting prizes from such an inspirational figure.

In the Computer Aided Design (Mechanical Engineering) category, IIT Ropar's Tejas Shah and Puneet Mahananda won the 1st prize. From the softer skills side, Rohit Tanwar and Mithun Parashar, both students of Institute of Hotel Management, Chandigarh won the Salad Making competition.

The highlight of the Tech Fest 2012 was the highly excited hundreds of school students who were participating for the first time in an event of this scale and nature. Apart from more than 4,200 students from 71 schools from across the region who came visiting the Tech Fest, students from many leading schools from Chandigarh also participated.

The entire atmosphere remained livewire with colourful dances set to catchy Bollywood numbers keeping pace with western style performances  even as Salsa, Bhangra, Himachali Nati and quintessential Gidhha vying for the loudest cheers from excited crowds.

The campus of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Gharuan was choc-a-block with loudly cheering students till late hours in the evening as they awaited renowned Rock Band from Kolkata, Underground Authority, to perform.  Tech Fest will come to a close tomorrow with a happening high-voltage performance by Jazzy B.

CAT results to be declared on January 11

CHANDIGARH, JAN10

The Common Admission Test (CAT) result is going to be declared on 11^th January, 2012. With the declaration of the result the decks would be cleared for the admission to  around13 IIMs and 142 Top Non IIM B-Schools. Around 1.85 lakh candidates had appeared in the online CAT-2011 exam.

Chandigarh-Based Aryans Business School has started free helplines for CAT Aspirants on which students would get the result on Wednesday. Aspirants can call on 98762-99888 or 98765-99888 from 9 am to 4 pm and can get the result. This would be beneficial for those students who don’t have internet access or who have connectivity problem. Students have to call on these numbers with CAT Registration Number.

It is to be mentioned that CAT 2011 was conducted in a 20 day window from Saturday, October 20, 2011 to Friday, November 18, 2011 in 68 test centers across 36 cities. This year, IIM Calcutta conducted CAT in association with Prometric. Merit Trac Services Pvt. Ltd., Everonn Education Ltd and CMS provided resources and on-site support to Prometric for the test delivery of CAT 2011. CAT 2011 results can be viewed at www.catiim.in.

Punjab Ball Badminton at KCSS

The three-day Fourth Senior Punjab Ball Badminton Championship (2011-12) (boys and girls) will be flagged off tomorrow at Khalsa College Senior Secondary School. More than 22 teams of boys and 18 teams of girls from all over the state will be participating in the championship, said School Principal, Nimral Singh Bhangu, adding that the championship will be flagged off by SP Headquarter (Amritsar Rural) Jagdeep Singh in the presence of Khalsa College Governing Council, Honorary Secretary, S. Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina. 

Organising Secretary  Principal Balwinder Singh and Ball Badminton Association  Vice-President, Sarabjit Singh jointly said that the game of ball badminton is gaining popularity not only in Punjab but whole of country lately.

Capt Amarinder condemns showing of black flags to PM

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Captain Amarinder Singh today condemned the showing of black flags to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, when he was paying obeisance at the Golden Temple in Chandigarh today. He said it was not only unfortunate but highly condemnable that the holy place of Harmandir Sahib was used for the protest at the behest of the Akalis who are struggling for survival as they face imminent defeat in the ensuing elections.

Reacting to the incident, the PCC President said, this whole episode seems to be the handiwork of the disgruntled and frustrated Akali-BJP leadership which wanted to gain cheap publicity. He pointed out, some protestors, who were obviously the Akali-BJP workers and had hidden themselves under the garb of devotees had not only shown disrespect to a devout Sikh like the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, but had also violated the sacred sanctity of the Darbar Sahib.

Capt Amarinder pointed out, the team Anna had already distanced itself from the protest which means that it had been stage managed by the Akalis. “It was simply the handiwork of the Akalis for seeking cheap publicity to make a handful of people to waive black flags to the Prime Minister using the name of social activist Anna Hazare”, he observed.

He said, the common Punjabi feels hurt and upset over this incident as it has not brought any good name to Punjab. “Only the Akalis who have already lost the battle could be expected to stoop so low to use a holy place and sacred occasion for scoring petty political points even if it meant violating the sacred maryada in the process”, he remarked, while adding, “they (the Akalis) will never be forgiven for this incident”.
