AMRITSAR, JAN 25
Guru Nanak Dev University will honour two eminent
personalities, Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman-Emeritus, Infosys
Technologies Limited, Electronics City, Bangalore and Mr. Kartar Singh Duggal,
an eminent Punjabi writer, New Delhi with Honoris Causa Degrees at its 38th
Annual Convocation scheduled to be held on
February 1 in the Dasmesh Auditorium of the University. This honour would
be been given in recognition of their contribution in their
respective fields
Stating this, Dr. Inderjit Singh, Registrar said
that all students of Ph.D, M.Phil and first three position holders of all other
examinations would be awarded their degrees and medals on this occasion.
Registrar said that Dr.
Narayana Murthy rose to the extraordinary heights of being an iconic
businessman, a synonym of IT revolution in India and a corporate manager par
excellence who is now a mentor and an ideal to millions of young aspirants. He
said that Infosys, Murthy’s small joint project founded in 1981 with the
borrowed seed money of rupees ten thousand, is today worth over six billion
dollars having global footprints with 65 development centres in scores of
countries.
He said that Infosys pioneered the global delivery model which
redefined business procedures, promoting outsourcing and resulting in optimum
utilisation of talent and local sources. Besides providing consultancy and
development services to business and technology, Infosys has played a
ground-breaking role in Indian banking industry with the launch of its
‘Finacle’ an e-banking solution software.
He said that the hard work,
commitment and vision that Dr. Narayan Murthy invested in Infosys not only led
his company to the top, but also made him an international cult figure. At home
and abroad he has been felicitated, feted and decorated with awards and prizes
by leading world organisations. Among others, he has been the recipient of
Padma Vibhushan, (India), Officer of the Legion of Honor (France), Commander of
the Order of the British Empire (UK), Max Schmidheiny Freedom Prize (Switzerland),
Woodrow Wilson Award (US), Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award (Forbes).
In 2006, TIME magazine voted
him one of the Asian Heroes of the last 60 years bracketing him with leaders
like Mahatama Gandhi, Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa. Unlike others, at 65, Mr. Murthy took ‘sanyas’ from his
corporate home, Infosys; yet he has not ceased working and is actively involved
in corporate philanthropy which he and his associates started long back. He is
a quiet contributor who thinks the developing countries need big initiatives in
education, health and food.
Dr. Inderjit Singh said that
the second personality, Mr Kartar Singh Duggal is a living legend of the
contemporary and erstwhile Punjab, who, in his writings, has woven the
historical strands of partition saga and the intricate designs of modern
living. He is a master storyteller of human relationships and a virtual pioneer
of modern Punjabi fiction. As a chronicler of tragic social events taking place
in the wake of political developments in the first half of twentieth century,
he earned the repute of a naturalistic writer. But it was his exploration of
the hitherto unchartered space of female mind that gave him a distinct pride of
place in the Punjabi literary circles. He said that speaking from the modern
psychological perspective he laid bare before the reading public the deep
impulses, cravings and turmoils that rule the female psyche. In the
overwhelming world of patriarchy, he became the voice of the other gender and a
favorite of the new Punjabi reader.
Though post-independence
living in different parts of India, he never left behind the cultural baggage
of his native Pakistan Punjab. The sublime environs of Pothohar, especially its
dialect, became an integral part of his literary craftsmanship, and gave his
writings a characteristic feel of nostalgia and intimacy.
He said that S. Duggal is a
prolific and an active writer till date. He has published twenty six
collections of short stories, seven plays, ten novels, four collections of
poetry, ten works of literary criticism and scores of other assorted writings.
In his earlier years he was associated with All India Radio and produced plays
which gave him instant popularity. Most of his writings are regular part of
standard school and college curricula. Punjabis all over the world are indebted
to him for his literary contribution especially his fiction, like Hal
Muridan da which touches their raw nerves and inner cords. In recognition,
he has been practically honoured with all major literary prizes including the
Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award, Ghalib Award, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad
Award, Bhai Mohan Singh Vaid Award, and Soviet Land Nehru Award. In 2007, he
was bestowed with Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour, which ranks
him among ‘the immortals of Indian literature’.
