Colleges must pull socks to make education job-oriented: Sunkaria

 The intellectual deliberations held during second day of ``15th National Conference’ of College Principals at Khalsa College, here today emphasized on `academic autonomy’ and the `value-based’ higher education. The financial independence, making more budgetary allocations for higher education and making it job-oriented was also stressed.
 Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Punjab, Dr. Roshan Sunkaria who was the chief guest at Conference asked Colleges and Universities to pull up socks for making education job-oriented. He said after liberalization of the economy in 1991, there had been a vast change in education scenario. ``But unfortunately, there had been more emphasis on quantity of higher learning institutions rather than quality’’, he said.
More than 200 delegates who are Principals of various Colleges from all over the country are participating in the three day Conference, organized by Association of Indian College Principals (AICP). Dr. Sunkaria said the placement, independence in framing syllabi and cordial academic atmosphere was must for institutions to grow. Guest of honour at the Conference Khalsa College Governing Council honourary secretary, Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said such Conferences help to understand challenges before the society and education today.
 ``Education sector is undergoing major changes globally, which is impacting the education scenario in India also. The aspirations and requirements of the students are also changing. The education is becoming more job-oriented and the demand for professional courses is rising. We need to make changes in courses and curriculums accordingly’’, said he adding that educational institutions have social responsibility too.
 President of AICP Subhash Brahambhat, secretary Dr.RV Gaonkar and Khalsa College Principal Dr.Daljit Singh honoured the chief guest and other dignitaries. Dr.Daljit said that highly stimulating inttelctual discussions and debates have taken place during the Conferences and there was general consensus on more funds for higher education and academic independence of colleges and universities in the country.
He thanked delegates for taking part in each of the brainstorming sessions and said the College was happy to have the delegates from far-flung areas of the country at the campus for the Conference. The other major speeches which attracted attention included lecture by former vice chancellor of Agra University Dr. DN Johar who focused on making education conducive to the changing times. Dr.Sudanshu Bhushan gave a detailed account of the Union government’s new education policy of Rashtriya Ucchtar Sikhsha Abhiyan (RUSA) who underlines the generation of funds and revenue resources for higher education.
 The delegates also enjoyed the colourful presentation of a cultural program by the students of Khalsa College, late last night. The stage was’ managed by Prof.Navreen Bawa.
