AMRITSAR, JULY 18
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh today stressed that `environment degradation’ is emerging as an international challenge before all communities of the world and we must plant more trees to save earth’s fragile ecosystem. He said these words while kick-starting a special `plantation drive’, being initiated by Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) at historic Khalsa College Amritsar (KCA) campus, here today.
He emphasized the role of the educational institutions, students and teachers in spreading environment awareness and how the life and trees are inseparable and planting more tree can help us saving life on the planet. He quoted Guru’s messages and Gurbani verses to point out that in planting the trees and help saving the environment.
He said each student must adopt at least one plant on the campus and not only plant more saplings but also ensure that those grow into full trees.
Accompanied by KCGC honourary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina and KCA Principal Dr.Daljit Singh, Jathedar appreciated the various plantation drives initiated by NGOs, social, religious and educational institutions apart from prominent personalities. He said collective efforts were must to make the plantation a public movement. Chhina said that they wanted to make the plantation their annual exercise and though the campus area was already full of green cover they wanted that wherever possible more plantation takes place.
Dr.Daljit Singh joined Chhina to honour Jathedar and said all the plants would be named and saved to become trees in the coming months. He said they would like that the students themselves take the whole drive into their own hands. Others present during the plantation session included KCGC landscape Officer GS Pannu, Deputy Director, PR, DS Rataul, teachers and students in large number.
keeping the surroundings green and clean was most important duty of every individual and if the proper measures were not taken the very life on the earth would be in danger in the coming days, given the rising environment pollution.
The KCGC aims to plant over 4,000 plants in the coming one month as part of its annual drive in these monsoon months. The Council has tied up with the Pingalwara Society also which is donating trees and plants for enhancing further the green cover at all the 18 educational campuses being run under the aegis of KCGC.  Jathedar asked the girl students to take maximum part
