CHANDIGARH, JULY 2
On the personal request of Punjab Minorities Commission Member Tarsem Ahmed,
Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today directed the DGP Prisons to
exempt the Muslim inmates lodged in different jails across the state from the
hard labour during the month of Holy Ramzan starting from July 9 this.
A decision to this effect was taken by Mr. Badal following a meeting with Mr.
Ahmed, who called on the Chief Minister here at his residence this evening.
Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office said
that Mr. Badal asked DGP Prisons to issue instructions to all the jail
superintendents to ensure that all the Muslims inmates should be allowed to
perform prayers during the month of holy Ramzan, for which they undergo fasting
according to the tenets of Islam.
Mr. Badal also
asked the DGP Prisons to ensure strict compliance of the instructions keeping
in view the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.
