Local trainee Sachin Kumar maintained his winning spree in the boys under-16 as well as under-14 singles pre-quarter-finals of the AITA Junior Circuit Nationals Series being conducted by the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association at Lake Club Complex and Sector 10 Tennis Stadium here today.
Seeded top in the boys Under-14, Sachin Kumar showed the exit door to Yuvraj Singh Raghuvanshi of Madhya Pradesh by 6-4, 6-2. His quarter-final encounter will be against another Chandigarh player Dheeranush Singh Bhatti who ousted) Udayan Bhakar of Punjab in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
After meekly surrendering the first set, unseeded Param Pun of Chandigarh staged a remarkale rally to snuff out the spirited challenge of 13th seed Shrey Gupta of Haryana to win by 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. Pun will now face eighth seeded BS Rahul of Karnataka who stopped the victory run of Pranav Malhotraof Delhi 6-3, 6-3.
Sixth seed Sachin Kumar of Chandigarh also qualified for boys under-16 singles quarter-final. He won the first set by losing just one game (6-1) to take an early 1-0 lead against S.D. Prajawal Dev of Karnataka. The second set was a neck-and-neck affair. They were locked 6-all before Sachin clinched the issue in tie-breaker 7-6 (1). Sachin's next opponent will be third seed Jude Raymond of Andrha Pradesh. Jude Raymond defeated Allen Johnson Kundan of Punjab by 6-4, 6-4.
Unseeded Jajbir Singh of Punjab stunned seventh seed CLTA trainee Ranjeet Singh in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and set up a quarter-final duel with top seed and strong contender Fatehdeep Singh of Punjab who defeated Pranav Malhotra in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Second seed Shashank Nautiyal of Delhi also easily qualified for quarter-final by beating another Delhi player Vishu Prasad in straight sets 6-4, 6-0.
Top seed Rimpledeep Kaur of Punjab proved too good for A. Shameemaof Tamil Nadu without dropping a single game in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 in the girls under-16 singles second round match.
In a contrasting style Snehal Umesh Mane of Maharashtra toiled to overcome Shehnaz Singh of Delhi 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Snehal will face Rimpledeep Kaur in the third round. Kavita Mishra of Punjab also struggled to beat Jaya Bhandari of Delhi in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
