AMRITSAR, MARCH 14
With the help from EcoSikh, an NGO working for environment protection and awareness, the major plantation drive was today kicked off at Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology (KCET) and Khalsa College Public School (KCPS). The teachers, students and activists of the EcoSikh planted saplings and took a pledge to plant more trees in life to save fragile environment on the planet earth.
EcoSikh chief coordinator, chairperson of World Wide Fund (WWF) and Khalsa College Governing Council joint secretary Gunbir Singh who led the drive said the seven-day long drive in which hundreds of saplings would be planted in Khalsa institutions was dedicated to Sikh Environment Day today. It is due to the efforts of EcoSikh that the Guru-ta-Diwas (installation as Guru) of Guru Har Rai who was known for his message of protecting environment on March 14, had been declared as Sikh Environment Day.
``We motivate the religious, social and academic institutions to join hands for protection of environment and plant trees’’, said Gubir Singh that today the Gurdwaras had also been involved to take part in the campaign throughout the world. He said apart from the decorative trees, the fruit trees had been planted and the message of working for the protection of environment and keeping the surrounding clean and green had aired on this day.
KCET Principal Dr. Amarpal Singh said the teachers and the students took part in the plantation drive enthusiastically and they aimed to plant hundreds of saplings in the day to come.
