Horticulturists of New Zealand calls on Punjab Governor

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 15
A high level delegation of New Zealand Horticulturists, led by Mr.  Stephan Wade, today called on Punjab Governor and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Mr. Shivraj V Patil at Punjab Raj Bhawan.
       Mr. Stephan apprised Punjab Governor that they had visited Abohar and Amritsar districts of Punjab and studied the soil conditions for fruit orchards and found suitable and favorable.
       Discussing various aspects at length, Mr. Patil said, horticulture plays a significant role in achieving higher growth rate in agriculture. He said that the Punjab agriculture is passing through the crisis as many farm challenges are becoming a matter of serious concern. Therefore, the cultivation of horticultural crops has a great scope with regard to crop diversification, maintaining soil health, and water conservation. 
       Mr. Patil asked Mr. Stephan that how much minimum land they require for fruit orchard. He replied that they require minimum 100 acres of land which will be fully developed in three to four years of time.
 Mr. Patil said, if you give guarantee to farmers that they would get much more money than the rice, wheat and sugarcane crops, they will happily ready to give you their land.  He said meetings with agriculturist experts and Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University would also be organized for further clarification on various issues.
