CHANDIGARH, OCT 5
Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today urged the Union Defence Minister Mr. A.K. Antony seeking his personal intervention to ask the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for immediately taking up the matter with the Government of Oman to grant amnesty on utmost priority to Sepoy Jaspal Singh of the Punjab Regiment who has recently been traced in Oman, 41 years after he was declared ‘Presumed Killed in Action’ during the Indo-Pak war of 1971 at Hussainiwala Border.
In a letter to the Union Defence Minister, Mr. Badal apprised him that Service No. 2452388 Sepoy Jaspal Singh of the Punjab Regiment has been presumed dead since 1971 Indo-Pak War and his widow & children were granted ‘Special Pension’ and other benefits including 10 acres of land by the Punjab government.
It may be recalled that one Mr. Sukhdev Singh of Dugri Boormajra village of Ropar came in contact with Sepoy Jaspal Singh at Masira, Island Jail of Oman where the soldier was sent for kitchen duties in August 2010. Sepoy Jaspal approached him secretly and gave him details of his village Pamour in Fatehgarh Sahib District. The entire episode has been recently highlighted in the electronic and print media and caught the attention of the masses in Punjab.
Mr. Badal further said that this providential identification of a ‘War Hero’ needed to be investigated ‘Post-haste’ to establish the fact and if it was found correct, MEA may be urged to make concerted efforts to restore this ‘War hero’ to his family forthwith so that this unfortunate family may be able to cherish the company of their beloved in the twilight years of his life. This would be the ‘Most humanitarian task’ to enable this ‘War Hero’ to spend his last days with dignity, honour and love of his near ones, added Mr. Badal.
