'Punjab govt has no money for road reconstruction'

CHANDIGARH, SEPT 12
It is official. The Punjab government has no money for the reconstruction of the old, dilapidated and damaged roads in the state. This was stated in an official letter by the Punjab Mandi Board to Punjab Congress general secretary and Dhuri MLA Arvind Khanna.
Revealing this today, Khanna disclosed that he got an official communication from the Executive Engineer (South) Punjab Mandi Board saying that Punjab government did not have any policy regarding the reconstruction of the roads due to lack of funds.
Khanna disclosed that on August 8 last he had written to the Punjab Mandi Board for the reconstruction of the roads in his Dhuri assembly segment. However, after a month, he got a letter from the Punjab Mandi Board bearing number South/-2863, dated 10/09/2012 saying that, “there is no policy of Punjab government regarding re-construction of roads because of lack of funds. In case any new policy is formed regarding this then the reconstruction of roads (in Dhuri assembly segment) will be considered”.
The Congres general secretary this was quite contrary to the everyday development claims being doled out by the government saying that they were spending so much money on development. “The government does not have money even for the repair and reconstruction of the old roads, how can we expect it to construct and develop new roads?” he asked, while adding, the government was trying to survive on punitive taxation which is just a short term and knee jerk reaction only.
