CHANDIGARH, OCT 1
Senior Citizens are a store house of traditional knowledge and continue to be respected as a source of wisdom.
Expessing these views while addressing on Senior Citizens Day 2012 function held here today, the Punjab Governor and Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh, Mr. Shivraj V. Patil said older persons still play a major role in the social structure of our family system. They are regarded as custodian of age old wisdom, tradition, culture of heritage. He said due to wisdom gained through experience of long life, they still
hold higher place in our family and society. He said knowledge we gain from life and not from books alone which was in the minds of older persons which is helpful for the family, the government and the society.
Quoting the hindi movie Bagban which represents the true state of affairs relating to senior citizens, Mr Patil said the senior citizens need the company of their family members, sons and daughters, grandsons and grand daughters. The pleasure that is given to them by the company of their family cannot be given to them, in any other manner, he added.
Mr. Patil said that these days respect for senior citizens is dwindling. The system of joint family is becoming weak. So, the young generation misses the advice that can be useful to them in their difficulties. He said it is our moral duty to ensure the well being of senior citizens by providing them a legitimate place in the society and helping them lead their lives with dignity.
Appreciating the role of Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association, Mr. Patil said the association is doing excellent job to improve the status of the older persons in the Tri-city. He said holding two get- together meetings by the association in a month to help members overcome loneliness, boredom, neglect and isolation. He said running a number of physiotherapy, Acuppresure, Reiki, Yoga centres and computer
training centre to provide free services to all senior citizens irrespective of whether or not they are your members is highly appreciable, he added.
Mr. Patil also released a Souvenir on the occasion. After giving awards to senior citizens, Mr Patil said we have not given them the awards but we just honourd them.
Prominent amongst others who were present on the occasion included Maj. Gen. M.S. Kandal, Sh. D.S. Grewal, Brig. Keshav Chandra, Smt. Surjit Kaur, Sh. Anil Kumar and Sh. Pradeep Srivastava, ADGP.
