Congress to launch mass protest against punitive tax regime from July 24

CHANDIGARH, JULY 19

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to launch mass protests across the state against the process of punitive taxation regime launched by the Akali-BJP government recently.
Disclosing this here today, the PCC President Capt Amarinder while condemning the punitive taxation, pointed out, the state government had increased the power tariff by 12 per cent, besides imposing VAT and surcharge on sugar and mobile phones.
He said, this was just the beginning of a punitive taxation regime the state had in the offing for the people of Punjab which the Congress will not allow. “We will not let the government to do this and we will be holding mass protests across the state beginning July 24 from Jallandhar”, he said.
The PCC President disclosed that all the MLAs, those who contested last assembly elections, the district presidents and the party MPs will be participating in these protest dharnas.
Capt Amarinder said, the Congress had continuously been cautioning the people about the deceit the government was playing with the people by way of bringing in the “tax free” budget and then imposing taxes subsequently through backdoor. “This government has only vindicated out stand and our apprehensions have come true”, he remarked.
