BADAL (SRI MUKTSAR SAHIB), SEPT 13
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said that in order to strengthen the ties between India and Pakistan, the state government would make all out efforts to start cultural exchange programs with the other side of the border.
Talking to the media persons after presiding over a felicitation function of Pakistan’s Federal Minister Mr. Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo here today, the Chief Minister said that the state government was duty
bound for improving the ties with Pakistan so that a new era of mutual trust and co-operation could be ushered in the region. He said that for this motive, the cultural exchange program between both the
countries could play a pivotal role because through it the youth of both the countries would visit each other thereby playing a key role in breaking the ice between both the countries. On this count, Mr Badal urged the Federal Minister of Pakistan to impress upon the National Government of Pakistan for sending delegation of students to the educational institutions of the state for promoting mutual trust and goodwill in the region.
The Chief Minister also said that the state government would not only lay thrust on the firming the socio-cultural ties between the both countries but efforts would also be made to ensure that the bonds in
the field of sports are also strengthened. He said that for it matches of Kabaddi, which is a popular game across the border, would be held between both the countries to spread the message of love and
co-operation. Mr Badal reiterated that opening of trade between both the countries coupled with the relaxation of visa norms would go a long way in the economic development of the region besides promoting
the much needed people to people contact in the sub-continent.
The Chief Minister said that it was a high time when both these countries especially East and west Punjab need to come closer for their mutual socio-economic development and prosperity as these were
geographically proximate, culturally integrated and economically inter-dependent. He also said that if the present scenario of suspicion and distrust is replaced by love, peace, and goodwill then it would pave a way for heralding an era of economic prosperity,
goodwill, peace and friendship in the Indian Sub-Continent, which would be beneficial for both the countries.
Raising another key issue Chief Minister sought the immediate intervention of Mr Wattoo in impressing upon the National Government of Pakistan for providing a direct corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to
Sri Kartarpur Sahib to enable lakhs of devotees to pay obeisance at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan. Mr Badal expressed hope that the visit of Pakistan Federal Minister would go a long way in strengthening the ties between both the countries which would be instrumental in the development and prosperity of both the Indian and Pakistani Punjab in general and that of the border districts of both the states in particular.
Replying to the queries the Pakistan Federal Minister Mr Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo said that intelligentsia of both the countries comprising journalists, artists, legal luminaries; students and public opinion
makers should play a proactive role in strengthening the ties between both the nations. He said that the development of both the countries have been adversely affected due to the wars between both the
countries due to which it was the need of the hour that mutual co-operation, love and peace should be promoted in the sub continent.
Welcoming the proposal of cultural exchange program mooted by the Chief Minister, Mr Wattoo said that through the sports and cultural activity the age old bond between both the countries could be rejuvenated. He categorically said that all the issues between India and Pakistan including that of Kashmir could be resolved through the process of mutual dialogue.
Earlier addressing the students of Dashmesh College, Mr Wattoo lauded the role played by the Chief Minister in establishing the college equipped with facilities like that of shooting range in this remote
area. He also praised the students for achieving rare feats in the field of education, sports and extracurricular activities. Later on the Chief Minister presented a token a love from the college management to Mr Wattoo and his family members.
